Rumors started flying around the web in late June 2024 that Adam Lambert would be replacing Eddie Redmayne in the Broadway production of "Cabaret" at the Kit Kat Club. After weeks of speculations, the official announcement was released on July 24, 2024.
While we consider this a Personal First, in the interview below, Adam himself called it a Full Circle Moment. The start of it would have been hard to pinpoint though - when he was in New York for the "Wicked" touring company rehearsals, he felt he had made it to Broadway. The end point of the arc would have been clear - he made his debut on Septermber 16, 2024 for a limited engagement until March 30, 2025. In a starring role! And to rave reviews!
Before the premiere, some fans felt this could lead to another round of "But he is not (Fr)eddie" comments, but by all accounts, including Eddie Redmayne's, Adam's performances are out-of-this-world breathtaking. John Kander, the composer of the play, asked "Adam, what planet are you from?"
The use of cameras is forbidden during the show - audience members receive Kit Kat Club-themed stickers to place over the backs of their phones. An audio-only recording of the whole show was smuggled out by a fan to whom we shall be eternally grateful. Below are some of Adam's performances:
Thankfully, Adam went into the studio and recorded an official version of I 'Don't Care Much' which was released on December 5, 2024.
"'I Don't Care Much' is a torch song dealing with indifference that comes at a point in the show where all hope and joy has been eclipsed by the presence of Nazi forces in Berlin. We recorded this track and filmed the video just as the anxiety around the results of the 2024 U.S. election hit our community. There's catharsis in the sadness for the listener, and I hope they can feel seen and realize they're not alone in this moment in time."
